Walking pace, walking speed and what counts as brisk

Typical walking paces. A relaxed stroll is around 15–18 min/km (3.5–4 km/h). Casual everyday walking sits near 12–14 min/km (about 4.5–5 km/h). Brisk walking — the intensity most health guidelines mean by "moderate activity" — is roughly 10–11 min/km (5.5–6 km/h). Power walking and race walking go below 9 min/km.

Hiking. On trails, pace slows with elevation gain: a common rule of thumb adds about 10 minutes per 100 m of ascent to the flat-ground time. Enter your total moving time and distance and the calculator gives your effective trail pace.

Steps and stride. If you log walks in the run tracker with a step count, it shows your stride length (distance ÷ steps). Average walking strides are 0.6–0.8 m, so 10,000 steps is roughly 6–8 km.

Same tool, walking mode. This is the pace calculator with the walking ladder active: the intensity badge uses walking tiers instead of running tiers, and the split calculator offers walking-typical distances. Switch back to running with the 🏃 toggle at any time.
