Walking pace, walking speed and what counts as brisk

Typical walking paces. A relaxed stroll is around 24–29 min/mile (2.1–2.5 mph). Casual everyday walking sits near 19–23 min/mile (about 2.8–3.1 mph). Brisk walking — the intensity most health guidelines mean by "moderate activity" — is roughly 16–18 min/mile (3.4–3.7 mph). Power walking and race walking go below 14:30 min/mile. In metric terms those bands are 15–18, 12–14, 10–11 and under 9 min/km.

Hiking. On trails, pace slows with elevation gain: a common rule of thumb adds about 30 minutes per 1,000 ft of ascent (10 minutes per 100 m) to the flat-ground time. Enter your total moving time and distance and the calculator gives your effective trail pace.

Steps and stride. If you log walks in the run tracker with a step count, it shows your stride length (distance ÷ steps). Average walking strides are 2–2.6 ft (0.6–0.8 m), so 10,000 steps is roughly 3.7–5 miles (6–8 km).

Same tool, walking mode. This is the pace calculator with the walking ladder active: the intensity badge uses walking tiers instead of running tiers, and the split calculator offers walking-typical distances. Switch back to running with the 🏃 toggle at any time.
